New Year, New Ideas, Same Old Me

Hello all!  Gods it’s been a long time since I’ve written anything here.  Or written in general for that matter.  I’m all graduated from college now and have my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.  So things have changed for me quite a bit, along with them my motivation and writing habits.  I have new games I’m playing, and new books I’m reading (though very few at the moment), and new ideas for writing.  And I finally completed a goal of mine: to publish Theo’s Story, or better now know as 2103: Destiny.  And not only get it published as an Ebook, but now as print-on-demand.  And of course I ordered myself a few copies, along with Star Catcher.

SAM_2947I’m quite pleased to have these two sitting on my bookshelf now.  And if you want to pick up a copy for yourselves, just head on over to the Ebooks page and grab your copy.

In the works next is the next book in line after Star Catcher, and the start to a series, hopefully.  Over the past year my writing slowed down to a complete stop and now has finally started to pick up again.  The pace is slow, but I’m pushing myself to get it going full force again.

To that matter, I didn’t participate in NaNoWriMo 2014.  Even though I had the time, I didn’t have the ideas or the drive.  To that end, I’ve had an idea for a new novel that’s been swimming around in my head lately and I’ve started to lay it out on paper (metaphorically).  It’s slow going, but I’m pushing myself as I want to see this idea come to fruition despite all the misgivings I’m having about it.  Those I will discuss in another post though.

Mostly I just wanted to let you all know that I’m not dead!  Though I doubt most will read this or even glance my way anymore (writing wise) since I vanished from the face of the Earth.  That’s not going to stop me, no, I need to get myself back in the game and not only write and edit to get more stories completed, I need to try and market them better as well.  To that end I started a Facebook page where you can “like” me if you so desire.  It’ll have similar posts to the site here, though more along the lines of minor updates.  Feel free to drop by and check it out.

I’ve also revamped the blog here with a new look and a header picture that hopefully looks alright.  I do my best with photoshop, but I’m definitely not a pro.  I get by with the simple things and hope they work for me.

Well, hope everyone likes the new look.  And I guess I should get back to writing.

Cheers!  See you next post!

Theo’s Story

I have this feeling of satisfaction, of completion now.  I feel accomplished.  It’s hard to describe, but with Star Catcher done and out there for people to enjoy, I feel complete.

It’s weird, I don’t get to experience this feeling much, so it’s new for me.  In all reality, it’s akin to my life’s work being completed which is a weird feeling.  And yet, I still  have more to write.

As for Star Catcher you should totally check out the book!  20% is free as a sample, so if you like it you can buy it.  Tell your friends though, spread the word.  Help out a poor college student trying to get by. Winking smile

With that done though, I now start moving on to another project that I have had in the works for a while and has been sitting on the back burner, as it were.  The working title right now it Theo’s Story.  I wrote this story back in high school and tried to get it published for my senior project, but I didn’t take into account self-publishing at the time as my project was on traditional publishing.  Truthfully though, eBooks were still fairly new to me and I was biased against them cause I still like being able to actually hold the book in my hand.  That and I was totally against self-publishing cause it cost me money and I was not willing to do it.  I have a different view of all of that now with eBooks and self-publishing with Smashwords.  I’ve done my research.

So Theo’s Story takes place in the Solar System after World War III, I forget how far in the future it is, something like 50 years or more, not sure.  I’ll have to look it up.  It’s been a long time since I’ve even looked at it, so it’s not very fresh in my mind, and I’m hoping this will help with editing it.  I will be able to read it for what it is.

The story itself is about the discovery of faster than light travel and what would happen if the corporations that control the asteroid belt got their hands on it.

The main character, Theo ends up getting dragged into a conflict between the corporations and a smuggler by the name of Dustin Anthony who has somehow gotten his hands on the prototype FTL drive.  Theo has to work to keep the drive out of the hands of the greedy corporations who would monopolize it for themselves and figure out how the drive is supposed to work.

They end up traveling all over the solar system and even visit post-apocalyptic Earth for a short while.

It’s a neat story I think and those who helped me edit it back then liked it as well.  So we’ll see where it goes.  It still needs some work and I wasn’t satisfied with some areas of the story, but if I can find any spare time in between all of the work college is throwing at me, I’m going to pick it up and get it started again.  And that may not end up happening for a while. I have at least three midterms this next week and I’m taking all engineering, and science classes, with a math class thrown in, so it’ll be challenging, but I need those A’s so that what I’m working toward.

Anyway, I should wrap up this post before I ramble on too long.  I’ve got writing and college to do!

Well, after a hectic and crazy past few days I am back at college in the dorms once again.  I’ve got most of my things unpacked and put away or set up, but there is still a lot to do for the coming year.  On top of that, I need to get back to my writing or editing, whichever I have the time or inspiration for.  I also need to do more sketching of cover ideas.  I figure I will try and work on that in the next few days.  I definitely have a list of things that I will be working on.

  1. Work on cover art.  Sketching, coloring, etc.
  2. Edit Star Catcher one more time.
  3. See if I can find a friend to read/proof for me too.
  4. Post more on blog.  (I need to do this more if I am going to get my writing spirit back)
  5. Do all of this while trying to keep up with school.  (That shouldn’t be too hard—famous last words right?)

I think that’s about it for that list.  I still have list of things that I am trying to finish other wise as well to get my dorm room up to par for this year and myself for that matter.  Well, then, off to start on my list I go.  Cheers!

Well… let’s just say that I have not had that great of a time coming up with cover art for Star Catcher.  I’ve got a few ideas: a planet backed by the rising sun, Jayko standing in the foreground looking up at it, with the Star Catcher racing off into orbit.  Or the Star Catcher sitting on it’s landing struts in a field with Jayko standing under it looking up.  Or just the Star Catcher by itself.  Or another idea someone mentioned to me: have the flying city that Jayko grew up in on the cover either flying in the sky, or I could have it in ruins sitting at the foot of a mountain, the Star Catcher sitting in a field of grass facing it in the foreground.  (I would love to see that one).  I did have a recent idea of having Jayko standing on the catwalk inside hold of the Star catcher looking at the artifact that dominates the entire space.

There’s quite a bit for me to work off of, but I’m not entirely sure what makes up a good book cover.  I tried to sketch up a few of these to see what they would look like and promptly found out how out of practice I am at sketching things like people, let alone spaceships.  So the book cover is still up in the air and I don’t have any sketches to post here on the blog.  I would love to get at least some of them finalized and scanned in so I could do some sort of voting thing to see which ones people would like the most.  But for that I need to have more than one unfinished sketch.

On another note, I talked with the artist I want to do the cover art and she is a little unsure of what to do for it as well.  And this is understandable.  I’ve been able to give her some ideas, but once she finishes reading the story, then she should hopefully have a better idea what would look good.

I don’t know how many of you out there reading this are artists or have had the same challenge of trying to design a book cover, but if you have any advice… What makes up a good cover?  What makes it memorable?  What inspired your book cover(s) (for any author readers out there)?  How was it (or how should it be) colored: pencils, pastels, paints, or computer?  Can you recommend any artists who do book covers?
